A recent report showed that infant circumcisions have been on a 30 year decline in America. While the procedure is still very popular — 58% of baby boys are circumcised — opponents of circumcision say it’s akin to mutilation, and not a decision that should be made on behalf of a child. The American Academy of Pediatrics has shown support for childhood circumcision, citing
lower risks of acquiring HIV, genital herpes, human papilloma virus and syphilis. Circumcision also lowers the risk of penile cancer over a lifetime; reduces the risk of cervical cancer in sexual partners, and lowers the risk of urinary tract infections in the first year of life.
I’m curious to hear of your stories and experiences! Did you have your child circumcised? Why or why not?
