This is exciting.

Dreamworks’ new animated film, Home, will feature a young black girl (voiced by Rihanna) as its protagonist! Here’s a description of the movie from Wikipedia:

An overly optimistic, yet inept, alien race named Boov, led by Captain Smek, invades Earth to hide from their mortal enemy and make it a new home. Convinced they are doing a favour, they begin to relocate the human race, but one resourceful girl, Tip, manages to avoid capture. When on the run, she is accompanied by a banished Boov, named Oh, who has accidentally notified the enemies of his whereabouts.

Tip is voiced by Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez is the voice of Tip’s Mother, Steve Martin is Captain Smek, and Jim Parsons is the voice of Oh.

The release is set for November 2014, and a short clip has been released. Check it out (it doesn’t include Tip):

The movie looks really cute, and I love that it’s science fiction. From the looks of it — and given Dreamworks’ reputation — it will be an affirming film for young girls in general, and young black girls in particular ?

What do you think mommies?
